The Revolution Will Not Be…In Your Next Hip-Hop Album

Back in 1989, Public Enemy gathered the community, got a crew, Flava Flav grabbed the biggest clock he could find, put it around his neck, and they neatly put on their red, black and green “X” hats and made the video for “Fight the Power.”

Gone are the days when most Hip-Hop artists make a connection with their music and the revolution. Red, black and green got traded for 40 ounces, blunts, bad bitches and the ability to make it rain with a couple dollar bills. And, for years, cultural critics and Hip-Hop writers criticized Hip-Hop for giving up its claim to freedom for a claim in a higher tax bracket.

But, is Hip-Hop responsible for the revolution of African-Americans or should these artists be able lavish in the lifestyles of the rich and famous provided by an industry so many relate to the slave markets of colonialism?

This discussion isn’t a new one by far, but it seems Truth Minista Paul Scott of allhiphop.com just might have the answer.
